Support for Human Composting

A Sustainable and Dignified Disposition Option for Illinois Families

At End of Life Chicago, we believe everyone deserves to choose an end-of-life path that reflects their values. That’s why we support SB 2383, a bill that would legalize natural organic reduction (normally referred to as human composting). Natural organic reduction is a safe, respectful, and sustainable alternative to traditional burial, flame cremation or water cremation.

What Is SB 2383?

SB 2383, the Natural Organic Reduction Regulation Act, was introduced by Senator Mike Simmons in 2025. This bill would:

  • Legalize natural organic reduction (NOR or Human Composting) as a form of final disposition in Illinois

  • Create licensing and oversight standards for NOR facilities

  • Expand access to environmentally friendly and affordable after-death care options

If passed, the law would take effect on January 1, 2027.

What Is Natural Organic Reduction?

Natural organic reduction—referred to as human composting—is a process that transforms the human body into nutrient-rich soil through a carefully managed blend of organic materials such as straw, wood chips, and alfalfa.

The process takes approximately 30 to 45 days and produces soil that can be returned to families or donated to conservation projects.

Why We Support This Bill

2383 aligns with End of Life Chicago’s mission to promote compassionate, accessible, and environmentally responsible options at the end of life. It offers Illinois families a new way to honor their loved ones while returning something meaningful to the Earth.

Natural organic reduction (human composting) is:

  • Gentle on the planet

  • Free from toxic chemicals

  • Often more affordable than traditional burial

  • Grounded in care, choice, and respect
